![]() ![]() But - from your photos it looks like yours was in much better shape than mine was when I got it. Mine was a Hamilton, so I think it started out as a pretty nice piano. Also, I was extremely worried about someone getting hurt, and feel very fortunate that no one did. But - there is no way I would have tried that without it being something that was destined for a dumpster anyway. I was pretty annoyed because then I didn't have a piano in graduate school. But - between that Wednesday and Saturday they got impatient and decided to take it out themselves, but they had no goal of keeping it usable so they hacked it up with an axe. When I moved out, I wanted to take it with me and I had made arrangements to have my friends come down on the weekend to get it and the new tenants agreed. ![]() We got it all back together and I learned a TON about tuning, and it served me well as my piano in college (for fun). We were pretty smart about taking notes on how we disassembled it and kept all the pieces in the order we took them out, etc. We were able to move it and reassemble it. (very narrow staircases with low ceilings) We WERE up against the physical constraints that the piano would NOT fit through the places we had to get it through to get it to the place we needed it to be without taking it apart. We were successful at moving the thing (My #1 criteria for success was that nobody got hurt and that it didn't hurt the house). The only big heavy piece was the plate attached to the soundboard, and that then fit through the constraints we had.) (of course, I didn't disassemble the action, but pulled the action out and all the keys out, etc. We did NOT remove the plate from the soundboard, but we took everything else apart. So I disassembled the whole thing and we (my roommates and I) moved it in pieces. I had the same problem as you in terms of moving it. ![]() So I went to a piano restoration company that was in town and they gave me a very old (1908) full upright that they decided was beyond being worth their time / expense to restore. I wanted to try my hand at tuning (teach myself) and I didn't want to try on anything that even resembled a decent piano. ![]()
